When friends talk about how crazy politics in the U.S. can be, all I have to do is mention a few examples of Philippine politics to give them some insight into how flaky it has to get in the US for me to be impressed. Sorta like the Crocodile Dundee scene where he remarks “That’s not a knife…”
During a heated debate between two contenders for Philippine President a few weeks ago, a remark by one of them about slapping the other one quickly escalated with a counter challenge to a fist fight, which was then countered with a challenge for a gun duel.
Hyperbole? Check this video of a woman mayor acting like Manny Pacquiao.
But then there’s the funny side too:
American politics has a long way to go to get to the level of my birth country. The Philippine tourist motto is: “It’s more fun in the Philippines!” And that applies to politics as well.
